BJS releases new reports on “Criminal Victimization” and “Prisoners” and “Correctional Populations” in the US

Lots of notable new (but a bit old) federal data on crime and punishment
October 1, 2025

Though I suspect the timing is coincidental, the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics released a number of new reports just before the start of the federal government shut down. Here are the summary descriptions of the reports and links that I received via email:

BJS has released Criminal Victimization, 2024. This report provides official estimates of nonfatal violent crimes (rape or sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, and simple assault) and property crimes (burglary or trespassing, motor vehicle theft, and other types of household theft). It also examines the characteristics of crimes and victims, and whether crimes were reported to police. This is the 52nd report in a series that began in 1973.

BJS has released Prisoners in 2023 – Statistical Tables and Correctional Populations in the United States, 2023 – Statistical Tables.

Prisoners in 2023 – Statistical Tables provides counts of prisoners under the jurisdiction of state and federal correctional authorities in 2023. It includes findings on admissions, releases, and imprisonment rates. The report describes demographic and offense characteristics of state and federal prisoners and includes statistics on prisoners held under military jurisdiction.

Correctional Populations in the United States, 2023 – Statistical Tables presents statistics on the total correctional population in the United States. It summarizes information on populations supervised by probation or parole agencies and those incarcerated in state or federal prisons or in the custody of local jails. The report presents statistics on the number of persons supervised by adult correctional systems from 2013 to 2023 and on their correctional status (i.e., in prison, in local jail, on probation, or on parole) and demographics.
