Major Cities Chiefs Association violent crime survey shows across the board reductions in 2024

Thanks only to a Facebook post by John Pfaff, today I discovered that the Major Cities Chiefs Association has released this national data from its violent crime surveys at year end 2024. These data show that all categories of violent crime were down in 2024.  The reported drop in homicides are especially large, but the drops in rape and robbery and aggravated assault are also quite significant.

I do not know my crime data well enough to assert that these data indicate an historically low violent crime rate in 2024.  But I do know 2020 and 2021 involved some quite disconcerting crime trends that now appear to have turned around quite dramatically.  In this post last week I flagged some data from our biggest cities suggesting that 2025 was already off to a pretty good start.  Even in these divisive times, I would hope everyone is rooting for this good crime news to continue.
