A little more coverage, and a lot more to ponder, concerning great homicide declines
I flagged a few weeks ago, after noting my own 2025 posts (here and here) detailing big city homicide data showing the remarkable decline in murders apparently unfolding in many large urban areas, that I had see relatively little general discussions of these data and trends. Because I continue to view the recent crime declines of recent years to be a huge (and under-explored) story, I am going to continue to do round-up of notable press pieces that are giving the story some attention. So:
From Bloomberg, “Why Has New York City Defied the Great American Crime Decline?: In most of the country, crime is lower than before the pandemic.”
From the New York Times, “The Disturbing Truth About What Makes Americans Feel Safe“
From Reason, “Could 2025 See the Lowest Murder Rate Ever Recorded?: While it’s too early to say for sure, the data are extremely encouraging.”
From Vox, “Something remarkable is happening with violent crime rates in the US: Americans remained scared of violent crime. The numbers tell a different story.”
All these pieces (which are opinion oriented, but include all sort of data) cover slightly different ground and provide a wide set of information and ideas to ponder. I am hoping more folks will seek to keep unpack the good crime news, though I especially hope I do not jinx these developments with my coverage.
