More press coverage of more Justice Department filings arguing Jan 6 pardons cover other crimes
In this post from Friday, titled “Justice Department now asserting in some cases that Prez Trump’s Jan 6 pardons covers gun and drug crimes,” I noted an NPR report noting court filings from last week in which federal prosecutors asked judges to dismiss cases against two former Jan. 6 defendants subject to seemngly distinct gun and drug charges. As reported in a set of new press pieces, federal prosecutors have this week been making similar arguments in new cases:
From NBC News, “DOJ says Jan. 6 clemency covers Florida convictions for guns, grenades and classified info“
From the New York Times, “Justice Dept. Takes Broad View of Trump’s Jan. 6 Pardons“
From Politico, “DOJ says Trump’s Jan. 6 pardon covers man convicted of possessing grenades, classified info“
With these DOJ claims being made in many (but not all) cases, I suspect we might get some divergent rulings from district judges which could, in turn, lead to some interesting clemency-related appeals. I believe it has been nearly a half-century since the Supreme Court took up a significant case about the pardon power of the President, but maybe a mew case could end up being another aspect of the Jan 6 legacy.
